Fox’s new Batman prequel series Gotham is just days away premiering, and one of the first villains featured on the show is going The Penguin. Robin Lord Taylor (Walking Dead) will be portraying the villain, and he has been doing research. Taylor recently revealed that he has been studying Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia star Danny DeVito’s performance in Batman Returns, as well reading some DC Comics, as ABC News Reports:

"I'm definitely influenced by Danny DeVito's performance (in the 1992 film "Batman Returns") and even Burgess Meredith's performance (in the 1960s "Batman" TV series), but since we're starting with him as a younger kid, it was just (DC Comics) in particular that were incredibly valuable."

DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns supplied Taylor with some reading material including: Penguin: Pain and Prejudice, Batman: Earth One, Secret Origins Special Vol. 2.

Now that Taylor has researched the character, he has been able to identify with him, adding:

"Once you know what someone's gone through--no matter what horrible, horrible things that they've done, you sympathize with them. That's just how it is."

Gotham premieres Monday, September 22, on Fox.

Gotham executive producer and showrunner, Bruno Heller, spoke with reporters about what kind villains we expect to see in the series (Via Business Insider):

"We're ready to go with any of them. We haven't excluded anyone from the mix potentially, but generally what we're looking at is characters where there is some drama or a story behind how they got to be the way they are. We're looking for characters who live in the real world of Gotham as opposed to the even more super real world of Metropolis if you like. It's not about super powers, it's about super will, if you like. We veer towards those characters who are interesting as people, rather than interesting for their particular power or their particular gimmick or their costume."
