Sexual Assault Charges Against Folk Rocker Roy Harper Underway in Worcester Crown Court, UK

Folk rocker Roy Harper, 73, recently was brought to court on 10 sex assault charges with two underage girls. Now women, the case against Harper is underway and will take place in Worcester Crown Court in the U.K.

Per an earlier indictment, Harper had abused a young 11-year-old girl in the mid-1970s and indecently assaulted a 16-year-old in 1980. It was noted that the younger girl had struggled with alcohol and was prone to suicidal tendencies.

The charges include four counts of indecency with a child and two of having sexual intercourse with an underage girl. Prosecutors allege that Harper committed nine offenses against the 11-year-old in the mid-'70s and the older one at an address in Herefordshire, England, in 1980.

Prosecutor Anthony Potter opened the case by also saying that the offenses against the younger victim were alleged to have occurred at the singer's home near Marden, also in Herefordshire.

Explaining how the girl felt, according to the BBC, the girl, now in her late 40s, recounted various appearances at the Harper homestead. Potter said to the jury, "He is a man of some undoubted musical ability and it is a matter of fact that he enjoyed a degree of fame in the 1970s."

He continued, "The allegations cover a time period which, to use his description to the police, was when he was on top of the world and really making waves in the music industry, to a period when he was struggling with financial difficulties."
