Chicago Bears Fire Ray McDonald After 49ers Dump Him, Domestic Abuse Arrest Scandal

The Chicago Bears were tricked. They were convinced the often-troubled defensive end cleaned up his act and would be able to suit up for the team this season. In today's NFL, the creed is fool me once and...you shouldn't have fooled me at all, you have been given numerous second chances. With that in mind, the Bears went ahead and dealt with this situation by firing McDonald. McDonald was arrested, yet again, for domestic abuse. It's no secret that the Bears (and especially the NFL) need to rid themselves of these type of employees. This repeating scandal for McDonald has had another team dump him, with hopefully the rest of the league paying attention this time.

The Bears were impressed with McDonald before his signing and thought they had done their homework. Chairman of the Bears George McCaskey explained to Fox Sports of the process the Bears went through before the hiring of the controversial lineman:

"I spoke with Vic Fangio and came away very impressed with what Vic had to say about him, that he's well-liked by his teammates, by his coaches, his strong work ethic. That he's considered a leader on the field and speaking to Vic and Ray especially I was convinced that he's sufficiently motivated to make this work."

It didn't take long for it to not work out though. With another assault charge to his record, the Bears backtracked their stance on the kind of person McDonald is on and off the field. USA Today informs readers of the statement given by Bears general manager Ryan Pace on McDonalds dismissal:

"We believe in second chances, but when we signed Ray we were very clear what our expectations were if he was to remain a Bear. He was not able to meet the standard and the decision was made to release him."
