The Proms 2012 is opening today at Royal Albert Hall in London.

The world classical music festival will last for eight weeks until September 8, featuring 92 concerts by famed orchestras and directors.

Prom, short for promenade concert, originally referred to outdoor concerts in London's pleasure gardens, where the audience was free to walk by. In 1895, impresario Robert Newman arranged the first series of indoor promenade concerts at Queen's Hall.

The 118th series of concerts this year will feature London Symphony Orchestra led by Valery Gergiev, the National Youth Orchestra of Britain and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra led by Vasily Petrenko, and more world-renowned musicians.

According to the tradition, up to 1,400 standing places will be available for each Proms concert at five pounds in addition to tickets with seats.
