‘Game of Thrones’ Creator George R.R. Martin Leaving HBO Show Season 5: Writing New Book ‘Winds of Winter’ [UPDATE]

HBO’s Game of Thrones is no stranger to lose. The hit series kills off character left and right. However, the show is about to lose its most important part of its family, its father! Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin has announced that he will not be involved with the show for Season 5. Martin will instead be busy writing the next book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, The Winds of Winter.

Recently, George R.R. Martin spoke to Vulture about if he would visit the set in Spain/Dorne this season:

“I might make it over there early next year, but I’ve got to finish the book The Winds of Winter. So I’m making the trips I’m already obligated to make, but I’m not adding any new trips at this time. So I don’t think I’m going to do a set visit this year, sadly.”

Martin latter spoke about the new cast, adding:

“This season, most of those cast members are new to me as well because I haven’t been involved in the process. I’ve been doing a lot of other stuff. In the earlier seasons I was much more involved with casting. I would review tapes and comment, but that’s a time-consuming process. And at this point, we’re five seasons in, we have the best casting director in the business in Nina Gold, David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] have been running the show, and it’s a well-oiled machine, so it really doesn’t need me down there with the oil can squeaking at the wheels.”

Martin isn’t the only person not coming back for the new season. Earlier in the year Michelle Fairley told TV Guide The she will not return to the her role as the zombified-Stark matriarch, Catelyn Stark:

“Catelyn Stark is dead, I'm afraid. I'm sorry to say it, but she's dead. George [R.R. Martin] has written incredible novels, and David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] are doing a wonderful job of distilling those books into 10 hours and making a fantastic television series. But there's stuff along the way that has to go--you can't put everything that's in the book on the screen. There are sacrifices to be made along the way. Unfortunately, people might be expecting one thing, but it doesn't happen. It's life.”
