Emma Stone in Talks to Make Delayed Broadway Debut in 'Cabaret'

Hollywood actress Emma Stone, known for "Easy A," "Zombieland," "The Help" and the "Amazing Spider-man" films, is in negotiations to take over the role of Sally Bowles in the current Broadway revival of Kander and Ebb's Cabaret with Alan Cumming.

Current star Michelle Williams recently extended her contract to remain in the Roundabout Theatre Company musical until November 9. Along with Cumming and Williams, the cast currently features Bill Heck, Aaron Krohn, Gayle Rankin, Danny Burstein as Herr Schultz and Linda Emond as Fraulein Schneider. Both Burstein and Emond received 2014 Tony Award nominations for their work.

Stone was initially supposed to open in the revival, but scheduling conflicts prevented it. Directed by Sam Mendes, the third Broadway revival of Cabaret began previews March 21, 2014 and opened April 24. It is scheduled to continue at Studio 54 through January 4, 2015.

This is Cumming's second Broadway run as the Emcee. In the 1998 production, the third longest-running revival in Broadway musical history, he and Natasha Richardson opened. Later a whole series of stars took over the role of the Emcee, including Neil Patrick Harris and John Stamos. The many Sally Bowleses included Jennifer Jason Leigh, Joely Fisher, Molly Ringwald and Brooke Shields. Cumming won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards.

Stone has never appeared on Broadway before, nor on stage anywhere as an adult, according to online biographies. Nevertheless, her friend, the actor Max Crumm (Grease on Broadway, "Easy A" in the movies with Stone), told Broadway.com last year that "she wants to do Broadway so bad."

If it happens, let's hope the "Amazing Spider-man" star gets better reviews than the not-so-amazing Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark did before it mercifully left Broadway behind.
