Nintendo Answer to Robin Williams ‘Legend of Zelda’ Wii U Character Petitions After Ad-Man Suicide [VIDEO]

Fan’s know Robin Williams for his incredibly resume of work, from Genie in Disney’s Aladdin, to his more dramatic roles in films like Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets Society. The list could go and on for days. No matter who you are, you are bound to remember one of Williams’s films with fondness. However, The Legend of Zelda is not one of the things that people first think of when they think of Williams, but he has been a fan of the series since 1987. In fact, he even named his Daughter Zelda, after the titular princess. After his death fans posted a Change.org petition to have a NPC in the upcoming Wii U game. Now Nintendo has released a response to the petition.

The official Chage.org petion, calling for Williams to immortized in the next Legend of Zelda game, reads:

“Robin was an avid player of video games, with a love for all things Nintendo, and a particular love of all things Legend of Zelda. It is well-known that he named his daughter after the series' titular princess. Nintendo of America itself only recently hired him and his daughter to promote the franchise in a series of ads.

“So, in a day where there aren't many words, what can we do? Well, there's a new Zelda game on the horizon. A bold reinvention, a fresh new open world adventure for Wii U. I would like to suggest that when the game is localised to English, Nintendo of America and the Treehouse name one of the characters ‘Robin’ in his memory.

“He won't get to play it, but he'll live on forever in a universe he always loved.”

Now Nintendo has released a statement to Polygon in response to the petition:

"Robin Williams was loved at Nintendo. Our hearts go out to his entire family, and especially to Zelda Williams who we've worked with multiple times. We appreciate the outpouring of support from the gaming community, and hear the request of fans to honor him in a future game. We will not be discussing what might be possible for future games during this difficult time, but we will hold our memories of Robin close."

What do you think of the idea? How would you want the game to honor Williams? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
