Castleton Festival Returns in 2015: Honoring Late Maestro Lorin Maazel, Partnering with Jazz at Lincoln Center

The Castleton Festival will continue on its rich and educating history in 2015, honoring the legacy late founder Maestro Lorin Maazel and partnering with Jazz at Lincoln Center. Four weeks of opera, concerts, chamber music and more will once again come to Virginia from June 27 to July 19, 2015.

Castleton’s co-founder, a member of the Castleton faculty and an award-winning actor Dietlinde Turban Maazel has been appointed as Castleton’s artistic director.

Two additional weekends of concerts through August 3 have been added as well through the Castleton Festivals’ partnership with Jazz at Lincoln Center. The partnership will feature high school-age musicians living and working at Castleton as part of Jazz at Lincoln Center's new Summer Jazz Academy. The extension will present concerts programmed by the new JALC Summer Jazz Academy at Castleton. After months of preparation, the festival and partnership has come to life.

"When we heard Wynton Marsalis was looking for a location for his summer program, we knew it had to be at Castleton” said Dietlinde Turban Maazel, Castleton's artistic director.

The Summer Jazz Academy program is Jazz at Lincoln Center’s first music education and performance high school summer program. Designed and instructed by JALC's managing and artistic director Wynton Marsalis, the program is a meticulous training program for 42 of the most advanced and dedicated high school jazz students in the world.

Below, watch a video interview from January 2014 of Wynton Marsalis and Lorin Maazel talking shop and their shared passion for working with young, budding musicians.
