After Sexual Assault Investigation, 49ers' Colin Kaepernick, Texans' Clowney Sit Out Final Preaseason Game As San Francisco Blows Houston Out 40-13

Thursday's preseason matchup between San Francisco and Houston was pretty lopsided, but it wasn't Colin Kaepernick who led his 49ers to a 40-13 blowout against the Texans. Coach Jim Harbaugh instead handed the game over to his backups, who nevertheless dominated Houston. Kaepernick has struggled this preseason, though he's seen limited action. He has also been distracted this summer by a sexual assault investigation that was ultimately dropped. Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney sat out as well, though he and coach Bill O'Brien aren't just being cautious; he is still recovering from sports hernia surgery.

San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh let his bench loose on Houston Thursday night in order to rest his starters for the start of the regular season (via ESPN):

"'Some of the starters didn't get to play and that was a decision to keep them from that kind of fun,' Harbaugh said. 'I feel bad for that, for them, but some of our other guys got a chance to play the best game of their career. That's really exciting for me.'"

In Houston, the standout rookie and the NFL's Number One Draft Pick, is meant to start the regular season opener. But coach Bill O'Brien is monitoring Clowney's condition (via Houston Chronicle):

"I believe it's day-to-day. I believe that he would be ready for Sept. 7, as I see it."
