If you think that the current storyline between AJ Lee and Paige is sexy, you're right. But not because the quasi-lesbian love story/frienemy feud is simply titillating to dumb agro-males who fantasize about girl-on-girl action purely because of patriarchal conditioning. The reason the angle is sexy for real is that the two talented women on screen are doing a great job of storytelling. All the little twists and turns, from Paige's initial "I admire you, AJ" spiel to AJ's recent table-turning techniques via kisses and chocolates, may make this feud one of WWE's best in years.
The current angle between AJ Lee and Divas Champion Paige has all the makings of a potential disaster. It could be exploitative and disruptive to the Divas movement. But I don't think it is. The implied sexual tension between the two characters works for their storyline because they can legitimately sell it. Whether WWE Creative actually takes the relationship further or it turns out to be series of mind games, the chemistry between the two is dynamite.
So far, the angle seems to be that Paige faked friendship with AJ to gain her trust, simply to take the Divas Title back. Now that she's won it, though, Paige seems freaked out by AJ's advances.
The mystery is, what's AJ's motivation? Is she simply playing the game in order to get revenge and reclaim her title, or is "crazy eyes" AJ Lee truly falling for her "little English muffin"?
Either way, the tension is constantly mounting, and at Night of Champions there could be another crazy plot twist.
I was initially skeptical of this angle, since WWE is one of television's worst offenders in terms of content relating to gender and race, but the storyline actually seems to be working on its dramatic merits as well as its more prurient ones.
