Rosie Perez to Co-Star in Larry David's New Broadway Comedy 'Fish in the Dark'

Casting and Broadway dates for Emmy winner Larry David's new comedy Fish in the Dark have been announced, and co-starring with David himself will be Rosie Perez, Jonny Orsini (Macbeth, The Nance) and Tony nominee Jayne Houdyshell (Follies, Well).

Anna D. Shapiro directs a cast that also includes Jerry Adler ("Hesh" in "The Sopranos") and Jake Cannavale ("Nurse Jackie"), Bobby Cannavale's son, in his Broadway debut, with further casting to be announced.

Previews for Fish in the Dark begin Feb. 12 at the Cort Theatre prior to a March 5 opening. The Scott Rudin-produced show replaces the Cort's current occupant, This Is Our Youth starring Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin and Tavi Gevinson. Youth is also produced by Rudin and directed by Shapiro, with much of its creative team transferring their talents to the new show as well. So it should be an easy transition from "youth" to "a death in the family," the crux of Fish in the Dark.

Rudin reportedly had a hand in convincing David to appear in his play himself, which the playwright and actor hadn't originally planned on.

This will be Rosie Perez's first Broadway role since The Ritz in 2007. She has also appeared in Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune and Reckless. Since her breakout role in Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" in 1989 Perez has maintained a busy career in the movies and television, on stage, as a choreographer ("In Living Color") and as an activist for Puerto Rican rights. Other prominent movie roles include "White Men Can't Jump," "Fearless" (Oscar nomination), "Perdita Durango," "The Take" and "Pineapple Express."

Off-Broadway she has appeared in The Vagina Monologues (but who hasn't?), Jose Rivera's References to Salvador Dali Makes Me Hot at the Public Theater (for which she won a 2001 Theatre World Award), and most recently Close Up Space with David Hyde Pierce.

Larry David, the co-creator, head writer and executive producer of "Seinfeld," went on to create and star in the HBO comedy "Curb Your Enthusiasm." Fish in the Dark, which earlier had the working title Shiva, is his first Broadway play.
