From 'Fishing with John' to The Lounge Lizards, John Lurie Talks 'Strange & Beautiful' Festival and Paintings with TONY

John Lurie has kept himself a mainstay in the downtown jazz scene in NYC--he's continued his excellence both on and off camera, and now will receive an exemplary tribute during Strange & Beautiful: The Music and Art of John Lurie from September 9-27 at various venues and galleries in the city.

Known for his dry wit and idiosyncrasies, Lurie has kept prolificacy with many appearances and productions. Mastermind of The Lounge Lizards, contributor to a then-unknown Jim Jarmusch in Stranger than Paradise and TV superstar with IFC/Bravo show Fishing with John, there's not much he can't do, and now he's honed his sights onto painting.

The Strange & Beautiful gala that honors Lurie teams up with admirers such as Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Zorn, Deerhoof's Greg Saunier and Antibalas. Mr. Lurie, though, won't be in attendance.

Interpretations of his work spanning his greater catalog are expertly picked for each show--which runs through NYC's darling downtown dwelling (Le) Poisson Rouge and other outlets making it a small festival probably more-worthy than one in the woods.

Until then, however, TimeOut New York got an exclusive interview with John about the forthcoming shows. Check out what he had to say.
