Bryn Terfel, Emma Thompson Cast in Stephen Sondheim’s 'Sweeney Todd' at London Coliseum

Bryn Terfel and Emma Thompson are set to star in limited run of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd at the London Coliseum in the spring of 2015.

Sweeney Todd will kick off the English National Opera’s first-ever season of musical theatre. The musical will run for 13 performances from March to April.

Terfel and Thompson are no stranger to Sondheim’s musical as they finished a four-night run of the show with the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center this past March.

The London production will be the first in a series of musicals to be presented by the ENO as part of a partnership with Michael Grade and Michael Linnit. Grade and Linnit have their eyes on commissioning future collaborations with the ENO.

The Sweeney Todd production marks Thompson’s first performance on the London stage in 25 years. Thompson is best known for her work on film including roles in The Tall Guy, Nanny McPhee and Peter's Friends. However, Sondheim himself applauded her stage performance this past March.

Naturally, Sondheim's Sweeney Todd musical will retell the classic story of Benjamin Barker (aka Sweeney Todd) and his infamous pies. Todd returns to London from exile with intentions of offing his wife’s killer. He teams up with pie shop owner Mrs. Lovett baking his barber-shop customers. But, of course, Mrs. Lovett has a plan pof her own.
