Enjoy the ballet outdoors, at sunset, this Sunday at the Paul Milstein Reflecting Pool at the Hearst Plaza of Lincoln Center. Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon’s “After the Rain,” will be performed by New York City Ballet principal dancer Wendy Whelan ,with fellow corp dancer Craig Hall.
The featured event is but one of the highlights of the Shinnyo Lantern Floating for Peace--a day-long ceremony that brings people of all ages, nationalities and faith traditions together in a collective quest for peace.
A Buddhist denomination, Shinnyo-en was originally established in Japan.
The date of the event is September 21, also the International Day of Peace and the opening of the United Nations General Assembly.
To celebrate, Shinnyo-en is provoking a message of peace through lantern floating, live music and the dance performances.
The music portion will feature performances by trumpeter Alphonso Horne, who was handpicked by Wynton Marsalis to be a part of his Jazz at Lincoln Center All-Stars.
Also included are the students of The Juilliard School with a dance performance choreographed by Abdur-Rahim Jackson and students from The Dalton School.
Shinnyo Taiko drummers, always a treasure to see and hear, are also set to perform.
During the event, audience members are invited to construct a paper lantern, inscribe it with a personal message of peace and set it afloat on the reflecting pool.
Once sunset hits, her holiness Shinso Ito, head priest of Shinnyo-en, will preside over the closing ceremony, floating hundreds of the LED candle-lighted paper lanterns.
The Shinnyo Lantern Floating for Peace is a tradition mean to inspire a spirit of harmony and compassion that transcends all boundaries of age, gender, nationality, ethnicity and religious tradition.
