AJ Lee and Paige Turn up the Heat on Lesbian Love Story: WWE Admits to Risqué Storyline? Smackdown Segment Sexy, Edgy

The spectacular feud between Paige and AJ Lee has been fueled by good writing, great wrestling (though never long enough) and a unique chemistry between the two Divas. In fact, there is so much chemistry that the WWE has reportedly been encouraging the seeming sexual tension between the two wrestlers. Are WWE admitting to this risqué storyline? The lesbian love story seemed to gain new traction after a sexy, edgy segment on Smackdown in which AJ and Paige turned up the heat.

Wrestling has always had a multi-generational appeal. In the 90's, however, both the WWF and WCW, the two most popular wrestling promotions at the time, began targeting adult male audiences. The constant escalation, which came to be known as the Monday Night War, included exponential increases in violence and sexual content. While WWE has made huge strides in toning their product down since the 90's and the so-called Attitude Era, the pendulum seems to be swinging ever so slightly back toward edgier material.

The content, while maintaining a mostly kid-friendly appearance, has been getting a little racier lately. That's not necessarily a bad thing, though. The AJ/Paige feud, for example, is ostensibly about the Divas Title.

But the underlying strangeness provides a more complex storyline (via Cage Side Seats):

"It's been said that the AJ Lee-Paige interaction has been done with the intention of teasing sexual tension between the two, so that is the point of what they're doing on TV and it's intentional. WWE is trying to be a little more risque without running afoul of its various partnerships that wouldn't be on board with going too far with such things."

Even though WWE's supposed admission of the storyline is a big step in a different direction, the company surely has an eye on conservative parents and wants, above all, to keep all that money flowing in. So don't expect the same kind of classless raunch that used to show up on Raw back in 1998.
