People's Climate March Kicks Off in NYC, 300,000-Plus Demonstrators Press for Change

A global event, the People's Climate March kicked off in NYC yesterday with a gathering of over 300,000 people. The event is being dubbed the "largest climate march in history."

Everyone from environmentalists to Al Gore to low-income families all gathered on city streets to demand a change in carbon emissions and to make a move on the ever-pressing issue of climate change.

Beginning at 11:30 a.m. on 59th Street, the march congealed into a mass of protestors. Just before 1 p.m., demonstrators halted the crowd, bringing the cacophony of talks, screams, drum beats and more to the ground, begging the people to remain quiet.

Then, a whistle pierced the eerie silence of the streets, setting off a minute-long session of blaring sounds and horns to metaphorically become the "collective alarm on climate change."

The demonstration has led to mass coverage and focus. Having brought together such a large crowd from the Upper West Side to Hell's Kitchen, #peoplesclimatemarchnyc will be an event worth taking to the history books.

With a United Nations summit on climate change this Tuesday, the event couldn't have come at a more precise time. A calculated performance by the people, maybe, let's hope that the message doesn't get conflated.

From Paris to Papua New Guinea, the voice of a generation echoes through the voices of those who demand the climate be addressed now.
