Play on Words: Isis Ensemble Celebrates 10 Years Despite Name Controversy

A name can mean so much, particularly when it's tied to a radical terrorist organization such as ISIS. No, they haven't donned violins and taken to a peaceful ensemble, but the organization has chosen not to let go of its tradition, and on that note, the Isis Ensemble celebrates its 10th year in existence.

So much derives from a name and presents an intangible aesthetic. The name generates initial bias, and for that to be tied to a militant force in the East is surely a tragedy in and of itself.

As much as the name calls upon itself, it shouldn't slight the accomplishments of the Isis Ensemble. Which, by the way, pulls its name from the part of the River Thames that flows through the university city of Oxford, which is referred as "The Isis."

Comprised of international soloists and many other high profile musicians, the company prides itself on having performers who have touched base with every major professional orchestra in the U.K. They were heralded as Meridian's Artist of the Month and perform a wide selection of works ranging from Bach to contemporaries.

And now, despite the flak, the ensemble celebrates 10 years of uninterrupted performing — and on that note, we congratulate you, Isis Ensemble.

Keep tabs on the company with their Twitter and visit their site for continued read throughs.

Until then, here's a little preview below.
