San Diego Opera will play 'Murder In The Cathedral' which tells the story of the assassination of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury.

The opera is based on T. S. Eliot play and covers the last month of Archbishop's life as he struggles with politics and religion. Defending his church against the intrusions of King Henry II, Archbishop Thomas Becket was brutally murdered in 1170 in Canterbury Cathedral. He became a martyr and saint at whose tomb Henry was forced to pay penance.

'Murder In The Cathedral' runs approximately 1hour and 57 minutes and is sung in Italian with English translation displayed above the stage.

The cast includes an Italian bass singer Ferruccio Furlanetto, who will play the title role of Archbishop Thomas Becket. Furlanetto debuted in San Diego Opera in 1985 in the title role in Verdi's 'Oberto.'
