Hong Kong Ballet has new Principal Dancer - Wei Wei

Artistic Director of The Hong Kong Ballet, Madeleine Onne, promoted former Soloist dancer Wei Wei to Principal.

The Director promoted Wei Wei to Principal Dancer with immediate effect at the end of the evening of the performance of 'The Sleeping Beauty' where Wei Wei portrayed the role of evil fairy Carabosse.

Madeleine Onne said, "We have known for some time now that Wei Wei is an outstanding dancer with great partnering skills and a very professional approach to his work, but the maturity and artistry that he has shown recently, for example in his interpretation of Carabosse and Prince in The Sleeping Beauty has made him stand out in a way that cannot be ignored."

Onne continued, "Wei Wei is someone that younger dancers in the Company can look up to, and he is ready to be the "face" of The Hong Kong Ballet. I felt that it would be wrong to wait until the end of the season to promote him - I wanted to recognize his talent and dedication right away."

Current Principal Dancer at The Hong Kong Ballet, Wei Wei, was born in Liaoning. He won the third price in Male Ballet Dancer's Category of the China National Peach and Plum Cup and second prize for Ballet in the Liaoning Juvenile Dance Competition.

In 2003, Wei Wei joined The Hong Kong Ballet, and in 2007, was promoted to Soloist Dancer. Wei Wei danced major roles as Hilarion in Giselle, Tybalt in Romeo & Juliet, Prince Calaf in Turandot, and The Nutcracker in The Nutcracker.
