Company XIV Reprises 'Nutcracker Rouge' Holiday Burlesque Dance-Theater Show, Opening November 29 in New York

On the strength of a hit engagement last year, Company XIV has brought back its holiday burlesque dance-theater piece Nutcracker Rouge, conceived, directed and choreographed by Austin McCormick. Now in previews, it opens November 29, 2014 and runs through January 4, 2015 at Company XIV's new space at 428 Lafayette St. in NoHo, across the street from The Public Theater in Colonnade Row.

Nutcracker Rouge is described as "a sparkling reimagining of the beloved Nutcracker tale told with erotic, sensual and opulent flair--a Baroque-Burlesque confection of theatre, dance, live music, circus, opera and sumptuous design. Immerse yourself in a hedonistic display of gorgeous and decadent winter entertainment in this thrillingly unique fusion of nightlife and theatre."

Company XIV is known for extravagant, risqué shows often retelling myths and fairy tales. "I grew up doing the traditional Nutcracker," McCormick told WNYC in an interview broadcast this morning, "about an awakening for the main character, Clara, and…wouldn't it be amazing if [that awakening was to] the magical world of sensual discovery."

The New York Times wrote of last year's production, "The genius of this production is its transformation of traditional ballet into louche vaudeville…opulently burlesque and deliciously Freudian." Paper called it the year's "sexiest dance performance." As the show contains partial nudity, only patrons 21 and over will be admitted.

Tickets are available online.
