Le Poisson Rouge Host Bollywood Disco Christmas Party Feat. Shiamak Davar Dance Team, DJ Rekha and Fictive

Le Poisson Rouge will be hosting a Bollywood Disco Christmas Party for anyone who wants to keep the Christmas spirit alive and dance the night away.

Bollywood Disco X-Mas Edition will feature exuberant music and a special performance from the Bombay-meets-LA Shiamak Davar dance team, guaranteed to help shake off that enormous dinner. Shiamak’s powerful storytelling through the medium of song and dance has enabled him to create masterpieces that stimulate the body, mind and spirit, and make music visible through innovative dance movement, costumes and set design. He has entertained world leaders including former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and international stars Tom Cruise, Richard Gere, Will Smith, Michael Douglas, Sting, Bryan Adams, Stevie Wonder, Oprah Winfrey and Debbie Allen.

Recently, Bollywood has lit up the cultural radar of the west, resulting in extensive press coverage, references in films like Moulin Rouge and Ghost World, and the nomination of Lagaan for best foreign film Oscar. Not surprisingly, classic Bollywood soundtracks from the '70s have been the focus of no less than 5 compilations in the past few years. Even the cutting edge of hip hop production has been shaped by the retro Bollywood sound, as producers like Dan the Automator, DJ Shadow, Timbaland and DJ Quik dip into Bollywood’s back-catalog to widen their production palette.

In NY the rise of interest in Bollywood coincides with a general resurgence in the sounds of the city’s own musical golden age: the progressive disco associated with legendary clubs like the Loft, the Paradise Garage and Studio 54.

The show will also feature music by DJ Rekha, a British born, New York City based DJ, curator, record label owner, educator and activist. Called the “Ambassador of Bhangra” by the New York Times and named one of the most influential South Asians by Newsweek, Rekha is among the first DJs to merge classic Bhangra and Bollywood sounds into the language of contemporary electronic dance music. The shows visuals will be provided by Fictive, a New York City based award winning designer and media artist doing set, lighting, and video projection/LED design.
