Miller Theatre Continues Early Music Series With 'From the Imperial Court' Featuring Stile Antico

The 2014-15 Early Music series at The Miller Theatre at Columbia University's School of the Arts will continue with “From the Imperial Court” featuring Stile Antico.

Stile Antico is a 12-member vocal ensemble based in London and has been established as one of the most accomplished and innovative of their kind. In “From the Imperial Court,” the collective will interpret Renaissance choral music with a program that captures triumphs and tragedies from the imperial courts of the Hapsburgs.

Stile Antico’s bestselling recordings on the Harmonia Mundi label have earned accolades, including the Gramophone Award for Early Music, the Diapason d’or de l’année, the Edison Klassiek Award and the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, and have twice received Grammy nominations.

“It’s a thrill to welcome back Stile Antico. Inspired by their recent CD, this thoughtful program highlights two centuries of music connected by its central place within the royal court of the Hapsburgs. As always, Stile Antico’s incredible artistry is sure to make this not just an interesting program for early music enthusiasts, but a transcendent musical experience for any listener,” says Miller Theatre Executive Director Melissa Smey.

According to a press release, Miller Theatre’s Early Music series has been lauded as a leader in New York’s burgeoning historical performance scene. This season, they will present intricate vocal works from England, Italy and Spain; a French Baroque setting of the myth of Ulysses; and a dark, dramatic lament performed by candlelight. Most performances are held offsite at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, where listeners can experience this music in a setting much like the cathedrals where Tallis, Byrd, Monteverdi and others would have originally performed it.

“From the Imperial Court” will be performed at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in New York Feb. 28 at 8 p.m. Click here for tickets to the show.
