CW ‘Flash’ New Gay Villain Pied Piper Called “Evil Harry Potter:” ‘Spring Awakening’ Andy Mientus Cast as New Rogue [SPOILERS]

Tonight, the hit CW series The Flash is all new with yet another Rogue. This week’s villain is Hartley Rathaway, A.K.A. The Pied Piper played by Broadway vet Andy Mientus (Spring Awakening). In the comics Pied Piper is an openly gay, reformed villain who uses sonics to control people. Recently, The Flash E.P. Andrew Kreisberg opened up about how they altered The Pied Piper for the show, calling him the “evil Harry Potter.”

The official plot synopsis for tonight’s all new episode of The Flash, titled “The Sound and the Fury,” reads:

“Dr. Wells' former protégé, Hartley Rathaway, returns to seek revenge on his mentor after being affected by the particle accelerator explosion. Meanwhile, Iris is hired as a cub reporter; Cisco recalls his first day on the job at S.T.A.R. Labs when he met Hartley and Caitlin; and Joe asks Eddie for a favor but asks him to keep it a secret from Barry.”

Flash executive producer Andrew Kreisberg recently opened up to Entertainment Weekly tonight’s new villain, The Pied Piper Hartley Rathaway, played by Andy Mientus (Spring Awakening):

“Hartley is not a meta-human. He’s one of our technology-based powers, like Captain Cold [Wentworth Miller]. They hadn’t really gone up against anybody like him before. We wanted them to go up against somebody who was brilliant, a genius and somebody they really had to outwit, which is different. A lot of times Barry [Grant Gustin] has to outrun or outspend the villain.”

Kreisberg went on to talk about how they made cooler for TV:

“The Pied Piper dressed very flamboyantly and would play his flute and warp people’s minds. We wanted to do something a little more grounded. We were all fans of Andy’s from his work on Broadway. When he came in, we said he was evil Harry Potter.”

Be sure to check out the all new episode of The Flash, tonight at 8:00 p.m. eastern on The CW.
