Anne Hathaway Returns to the Stage in Public Theater's 'Grounded,' Directed by Julie Taymor

Anne Hathaway returns to the stage as the lead in The Public Theater’s production of Grounded, directed by Tony Award-winner Julie Taymor.

Hathaway, who won an Oscar for her film portrayal of Fantine in Les Misérables, will be the star of the one-woman show written by George Brant. Grounded depicts the working and home life of an ace fighter pilot who is reassigned to remote-controlled drone strikes after finding out that she is pregnant. She works hunting targets for 12 hours a day before going home to her family in the suburbs.

Grounded was previously shown in the U.K., as well as a different production at Walkerspace in New York last year, and won the 2012 Smith Prize for Political Theater.

This play will mark Hathaway’s return to the Public Theater stage, where she earned rave reviews as Viola in the 2009 Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night.

Taymor has also had her share of accolades. In 1998, she was the first woman to win a Tony for direction of a musical for her work on The Lion King. She also earned a second Tony for costume design. Though she experienced some trouble while staging the troubled Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, she bounced back with the off-Broadway staging of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Grounded will feature scenic design by Riccardo Hernandez, lighting design by Christopher Akerlind, sound design by Will Pickens, prodection design by Peter Nigrini and original music by Elliot Goldenthal.

Grounded will being previews April 7 in the Anspacher Theater. The official opening date for the place is April 23.
