[WATCH] J.K. Simmons Hosts 'Saturday Night Live,' Channels Abusive Jazz Maestro From Oscar-Frontrunner 'Whiplash'

With the Oscars nigh, some of the contenders are hitting the late night circuit to get some good ol' fashioned face time in before the gala. And taking the Saturday Night Live stage was none other than Oscar-nominated J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) -- and he even brought abusive jazz-maestro Terence Fletcher with him.

The Oscar frontrunner hosted SNL and brought his mentally abusing, domineering, band-leading character Terence Fletcher with him. While he claims he has no personal connection with the character, he is a similar presence as the role.

If you have not seen the movie, Whiplash centers around a fictional New York City conservatory, where the abusive jazz maestro Fletcher is known for breeding great jazz musicians. Andrew Neyman (Miles Teller), a first-year at the conservatory, is noticed by Fletcher and is offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of the studio band.

But the audience soon learns the mental trials of what it means to become "great."

Having taken top accolades at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, Whiplash proves to be this year's favorite at the Oscars and is poised to do great on the night, Feb. 22.

And as Simmons indicates, maybe it is because he did a series of car insurance commercials, or maybe it was him doing the voice of the yellow M&M, but he brings a certain fire to SNL that is uncanny.

So check him out below in the meantime:
