While the city retreats indoors, the New York Philharmonic announced Tuesday the details of its free NYC parks concerts for 2015, a slight reprieve for Manhattan's most undesirable lower-20s forecast.
It is in its 50th anniversary of the series and will run from June 17 through 23 across the five boroughs. And as the NY Phil notes, the series is prime real estate for social media exposure. While classical, opera and the arts try to foray into the hearts of a younger audience, thus, this is their chance to do it.
This year, too, the Philharmonic invites audience members to share their photographs, videos and stories through a new special website. If you're lucky, maybe your picnic of performance pictures will make the cut and be featured online.
Two separate programs are planned, according to WQXR. First, Alan Gilbert will conduct a completely American program on the iconic Great Lawn in Central Park (June 17), Cunningham Park in Queens (June 22) and Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx (June 23).
The lens, then, will refocus on veteran Swiss conductor Charles Dutoit as he leads concerts on the Great Lawn and in Brooklyn's Prospect Park (June 18 and 19), featuring performances of Berlioz, Saint-Saens, Stravinsky and Ravel.
An indoor concert in Staten Island, too, will be announced at a later date.
Having began on Aug. 10, 1965, the 50th anniversary of the series will be a much needed celebration for New Yorkers too cold to even think about a park outing at the moment.
