No one is trying to take away anything form Benedict Cumberbatch's amazing performance in The Imitation Game, but they are pretty sure he doesn't deserve an Academy Award for it this year. According to the latest gossip news updates, Sherlock Holmes own mother, Wanda Ventham, is telling people that Eddie Redmayne is a shoo-in to take home the 2015 Oscar for Best Actor after playing Stephen Hawking so well in The Theory of Everything that even the surly physicist was impressed. For Eddie, a lot of the acclaim comes as a complete shock after being judged so harshly by fans and critics alike in the past for his choice of movie roles -- like when he played Julianne Moore's son and lover in 2007's Saving Grace.
Anyone that has seen Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal of Alan Turing in The Imitation Game would probably agree that it would be enough to garner him the Best Actor Oscar in any other year but this one.
Although she couldn't be more impressed with her son's work or proud of his achievements, Wanda Ventham, explained that she really didn't see her Sherlock Holmes playing son walking away with golden statute knowing that Eddie Redmayne had also been nominated (via Mirror):
"We got to Los Angeles yesterday and we are so excited and happy.
"Though I think Eddie will clean the board.
"Fingers crossed though, but the nomination is everything...I'm so happy for him in every way."
For Remayne, adjusting to world celebrated actor status has been quite a jolt from his old place in Hollywood as the character actor that folks love to hate.
During an interview with the Mirror, Redmayne noted the lukewarm reception to film work so far has left him wholly unprepared to deal with the level of prestige now being associated with his name:
"I'm a total Marmite actor, you either love what I do or hate it. I've done it all: incest, matricide, plenty of gay roles, pedophilia... Although I'm not sure I should really be joking about those things - I'm a bit worried it won't come across all that well.
"I read on a blog once: 'Eddie Redmayne either does period dramas or plays American f-ck-ups'."
Redmayne went on to explain that he had already adjusted to the fact that not really getting recognized for his artist merits was just a part of showbusiness:
"The complicated thing with acting is that however brilliantly successful or good you are you are not in control.
"Unless you start producing your own material or writing, even then it's a complicated world."
Well...Eddie Redmayne shouldn't have any problem getting attention for his work -- whether good or bad -- after he wins that Oscar tonight.
