'The Iceman Cometh,' Currently Starring Nathan Lane and Brain Dennehy at BAM, May be Making Moves to Broadway

Rumor has it that The Iceman Cometh, which is currently playing at The Brooklyn Academy of Music starring Tony winners Nathan Lane and Brian Dennehy, may be thinking of transferring to the Broadway stage.

The almost five hour long show, co-produced by Scott Rudin, is currently sold out at BAM. Right now, there are no official plans or timeline for the transition but talks about the move are currently underway. Rubin sent an email to Deadline saying that there is “nothing near decided yet.”

The 18-character epic first debuted on the Broadway stage in 1946. The play was revived in production in 1999 staring Kevin Spacey as main character, Hickey.

In 2012, director Robert Falls took on the play in Chicago with Lane and Dennehy, which sold out all shows and garnered critical acclaim. The New York Times said, “Mr. Falls’s superbly cast production contains as many great performances as I’ve seen in a single show in years.” All of the actors from the Chicago production returned to the stage for the current run at BAM.

The epic is set in 1912 at Harry Hope’s saloon. At the bar, the biannual visit of charismatic traveling salesman Hickey (Lane) is cause for celebration. But when a newly sober Hickey arrives, his renewed outlook on life threatens to upend the lives of his old friends, leading to a series of devastatingly comic and heartbreaking events. Dennehy plays Larry Slade, a regular at the saloon.

The Iceman Cometh started its six-week engagement at BAM on Feb. 5 and will continue until March. 15 at the Harvey Theater.
