Bob Dylan has now added a visual concept for his latest Shadows in the Night single "The Night We Called It a Day." And if that wasn't enough, an old producer friend, Daniel Lanois, says there is more Sinatra to come from the Tambourine Man — beyond his most recent release.
Shadows in the Night, if you aren't in the know, is a new endeavor for Dylan. Having milled through the Sinatra canon, the musician uncovered 1940s standards that catered to his aging voice. As one could imagine, he was able to reinvent himself again.
In the latest video, Dylan and a friend pine for the affection of a seductive burlesque dancer, Dylan playing the bad guy in this scenario. Dipping into the noir spectrum, as is to be expected, the twisted love triangle ended with a bloody romance.
Robert Davi, who co-stars with Bob, is an actor who has been pegged for many gangster roles simply because of his grizzled looks. Interestingly enough, Davi also coined a Sinatra cover album.
However, in the context of his newfound voice, producer of Dylan's less-triumphant records, Oh Mercy and Time Out of Mind, remarked that this was a record long in the making.
For his surprising career turn, Lanois commented on the musician's decision to make the album, saying, "[Dylan] felt there was a lot of spirit in that music. He felt there was a kind of beauty, a sacred ground for him."
"For one of America's great writers to say, 'I'm not gonna write a song. I'm gonna pay homage to what shook me as young boy,' I thought was very graceful and dignified'," he continues in the Vancouver Sun.
A surprise, sure, but the new album comes well-received by the general public. Should he continue to do more, however, remains to be seen.
