Arthur Russell Tribute at BAM to Feat. Scissor Sister Jake Shears, Arcade Fire's Richard Reed Parry and Dev Hynes

Following the release of Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell tribute album featuring Hot Chip, Sufjan Stevens, Phosphorescent, Blood Orange and 16 more via Red Hot Organization and Yep Roc; BAM is hosting an evening of performances in honor of the late composer, cellist and electronic musician. Paying tribute to Russell is Devonté Hynes, Richard Reed Parry, Jake Shears of the Scissor Sisters, Sam Amidon, Cults, Lonnie Holley, Redding Hunter, Little Scream, Thao Nguyen of Thao & The Get Down Stay Down and Rubblebucket.

A staple of the New York underground dance and disco scene in the 1970s and ‘80s, Russell collaborated with luminaries Philip Glass, Talking Heads and Allen Ginsberg, to name but a few. Previously, the director of avant-garde performance space The Kitchen, Russell brought to life the minimalist technique in compositional music. Unfortunately, Russell passed away in 1992 due to AIDS, making World of Echo on Rough Trade Records his only ful- length released while he was alive.

In 2008, Matt Wolfe released his documentary Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell showcasing the genius of Russell and his posthumous fame through rare archival footage.

The evening of indie rock performances is presented in partnership with the Red Hot Organization and Red Bull Music Academy. The world premiere event takes place on May 29 and 30 at 8 p.m.. Tickets start at $35, and you can purchase them here.
