Placido Domingo Admitted to Spanish Hospital for Pulmonary Embolism, Performances Cancelled

Tenor, baritone, conductor and 72-year-old Los Angeles Opera administrator Placido Domingo was admitted to a Madrid hospital on Monday. Presently, he is being treated for a "pulmonary embolism" that resulted from "venous thromboembolic disease."

Now, it's been a while since Classicalite flipped through Gray's Anatomy ("a" not "e," obviously), so we had to cross-reference for more English-friendly verbiage. Apparently, Domingo was suffering from a blockage in an artery of his lungs; doctors maintain that said embolism was indeed caused by a blood clot.

Placido Domingo's myriad fans needn't worry too much. His P.R. team expects him to make a full recovery, though he will have to cancel several appearances later this month.

And Nancy Seltzer, Domingo's personal rep, says that doctors have advised the musical polymath to rest for at least three or four weeks.

Of course, this is not the first time Placido Domingo has had to fight off medical woes.

As the Associated Press' Chris Talbot notes, Domingo returned to the stage a mere 45 days after undergoing surgery for colon cancer in 2010.

As for those missed performances, Domingo has had to cancel five of Daniel Catan's Il Postino, which were to begin July 17 at Madrid's Teatro Real--in addition to at concert at Plaza Mayor on the books for July 21.

As with the American composer Stephen Paulus, here's hoping Placido Domingo gets much better very, very soon!
