Everyone's favorite street rat is back making his way to the great White Way. 1992's beloved Disney cartoon Aladdin is getting the Broadway treatment. The show is cast and ready for a 2014 opening.
Just like a wish come true, Disney' s Aladdin is coming to stage. The show will join the likes of other beloved animated classics like, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and The Lion King as the latest cartoon-turned-live-action Broadway musical.
The original film score was written by legends Alan Menken, Tim Rice and the late Howard Ashman, and featured such songs as "A Whole New World", " Street Rat" and "Friend Like Me." The Wedding Singer's Chad Beguelin will be adding additional lyrics for the new show. The original film score won two Academy awards, Best Music, Original Score and Best Music and Original Song for "A Whole New World"
Adam Jacobs has been cast as Aladdin alongside James Monroe Iglehart as the Genie, the role made famous by Robin Williams, actress Courtney Reed as Princess Jasmine, while actor Jonathan Freeman is reprising his role as the villainous Jafar from the original film.
The cast will be rounded out by Tia Altinay, Mike Cannon, Andrew Cao, Lauryn Ciardullo, Joshua Dela Cruz, Yurel Echezarreta, Daisy Hobbs, Donald Jones Jr., Adam Kaokept, Nikki Long, Stanley Martin, Brandt Martinez, Michael Mindlin, Rhea Patterson, Bobby Pestka, Khori Petinaud, Ariel Reid, Jennifer Rias, Trent Saunders, Jaz Sealey, Dennis Stowe, Marisha Wallace, and Bud Weber and The Book of Mormon's Casey Nicholaw will stage the production.
The show first hit the stage in 2011 at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre and featured all of the main cast. It is now scheduled to open in Toronto in November, where it will stay until January before moving to Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre on February 26, 2014.
