Kurt Sutter Talks ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Spinoff Series ‘Mayans:’ Will Charlie Hunnam Return?

The 2015-2016 TV season is about to start, but sadly there is a big motorcycle shaped hole in our hearts. That is because Sons of Anarchy ended last year. However, we might not have to wait too long before our next ride. Kurt Sutter recently revealed that he is considering a spinoff series about the rival biker gang The Mayans. It has been rumored that this new series might be a prequel. That would mean that we could be seeing Charlie Hunnam returning to his role as Jax Teller. Now, Sutter is clearing the air, and giving the lowdown on just what we can expect from the possible spinoff.

Recently, Kurt Sutter spoke to Deadline about how the idea for The Mayans spinoff came about:

“The Mayan thing happened as I was talking to Eric Schrier, one of the FX executives I’ve known since The Shield. We were talking about the idea of doing things for other markets, like the Spanish-speaking market. I casually said I’d be open to doing something with the Mayans. It’s the same [biker] subculture, but it’d be interesting to see the influences of that culture and how it impacts the subculture we already understand.”

Sutter went on to add that the show is not going to be a prequel, so don’t for Charlie Hunnam’s Jax Teller. to show up. However, he isn’t ruling the possibility of seeing other members of Sons

“I would do a contemporary piece, not a prequel, and place it far enough away from Northern California that it wouldn’t step on the mythology that’s already been told. It doesn’t mean that there couldn’t be some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed.”

Don’t expect to see too much of the town of Charming either. Sutter went on to discuss where he wants to set the potential spinoff, adding:

“I wouldn’t want to set it too close to the world we already know, and step on that. It would be cannibalizing what we worked very hard to create and I wouldn’t do anything to undermine. We’re figuring out what that would look like and I’m in the process of meeting with writers and narrowing it down. My intent is, over the hiatus I’ll initiate a script for the pilot and take it from there.”
