Chicago Cubs Want to Re-Sign OF Dexter Fowler in 2015 MLB Free Agency

Dexter Fowler was acquired by the Chicago Cubs prior to the 2015 season and now Theo Epstein is wanting to re-sign Fowler in 2015 MLB Free Agency this coming offseason.

There is no question that re-signing Fowler should be a priority for the Cubs. He fit into the 2015 roster perfectly and was a veteran leader for them. They could choose to go with another free agent like Jason Heyward instead, but more than likely Fowler is going to be the guy that they sign this offseason.

Epstein talked to the media about his desire to sit down with Fowler and work out a deal to bring him back to Chicago next season.

"He fit in tremendously well in this organization, and he made a wonderful impression," he said. "He's a free agent, and he's earned that status. We'll see what the future holds, but certainly there's interest in sitting down and seeing if there's a way to keep him as a Chicago Cub."

Throughout the course of the 2015 season, Fowler ended up compiling a .250 batting average to go along with 17 home runs and 46 RBI's. He didn't put up massive production, but he certainly was a big part of helping them get all the way to the NLCS series. Unfortunately, the Cubs were unable to beat a red hot New York Mets team.

Despite that fact, the young bats that the Cubs have are going to continue improving over the next few seasons. Epstein will want to revamp the starting pitching staff and make an addition to the bullpen, but the Cubs don't necessarily need to make any offensive changes.

At 29 years old, Fowler still has quite a bit of high caliber baseball left to play in his career. Not only does he have a good bat, he is also very athletic and is able to use that athleticism to be a defensive playmaker as well.

All of that being said, Fowler seemed to enjoy his season with the Cubs and would likely be more than open to returning if the Cubs give him a fair contract offer.

Expect to see the Cubs and Fowler get something done at some point this offseason to bring him back to the friendly confines of Wrigley Field.
