New York Yankees Rumors: Starlin Castro Is a Potential Trade Target in MLB Offseason

The New York Yankees are looking to get back into contention this season and need to make some moves to get there. According to the rumor mill, Starlin Castro is a potential trade target in the MLB offseason this year.

Castro was a huge part of the Cubs' postseason run last season and showed major improvement when Joe Maddon switched him to second base. New York is in need of help in the infield and a recent report from the New York Daily News mentioned that the two teams have discussed a Castro for Brett Gardner trade.

Adding a piece like Castro would be the perfect pickup for the Yankees this offseason. He is still young at just 25 years old and his flashes of success last season were huge for his trade value. Chicago isn't going to give him away for nothing, but if Brett Gardner is all it takes to bring him on board the Yankees should be all over that move.

During the 2015 season with the Cubs, Castro ended up compiling a .265 batting average to go along with 11 home runs and 69 RBI's. Those numbers may not look huge, but adding them into the lineup for the Yankees would be a nice step in the right direction.

Rumors are beginning to swirl about the Yankees and what they could try to do this offseason. Making a big splash might be in the cards for New York, or they could settle with one or two solid additions.

Is Castro the type of piece that could power the Yankees back into postseason contention by himself? Absolutely not, but he does have the chance to be a consistent every day piece for them. He also has a lot more experience than most 25-year-old players have at this stage in their career.

Needless to say, hearing that the two teams have discussed this trade is intriguing in and of itself.

Theo Epstein and the Cubs are looking to make some major moves and bringing a piece like Gardner in would likely replace Dexter Fowler. Gardner finished last season with a .259 batting average to go along with 16 home runs and 66 RBI's.

Don't be surprised to hear plenty more Yankees rumors come out over the next couple of days or for these two teams to get more serious in trade discussions.
