‘Matilda The Musical’ Coming to Broadway in 2013

"Matilda The Musical," the Olivier Award-winning production, is coming to Broadway next year.

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and The Dodgers, the producers of the musical, announced Thursday that the hit musical will begin previews on March 4, 2013, at Broadway's Shubert Theatre, with an official opening  night set for April 11.

Adapted from Roald Dahl's 1988 novel "Matilda," Matilda The Musical was written by the playwright Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by comedian Tim Minchin, and direction by Matthew Warchus.

The show premiered at the Royal Shakespeare Company's Courtyard Theatre in November 2010, performing to sold-out audiences for 12 weeks. The musical transferred to London's West End theatre on October 25, 2011. A film version of the story, directed by Danny DeVito, was released in 1996.

"Matilda" tells the story of a gifted girl who unleashes her magical powers on her extremely unpleasant parents and an evil headmistress.

Casting for the Broadway transfer is soon to be announced.
