Broadway Highlight: ‘Hedwig’ Vet Michael Cerveris’ Loose Cattle Covers ‘Fun Home’ “Pony Girl”

Broadway Highlight: Fun Home was without a doubt one of the best Broadway musicals of 2015, winning the Tony for just that. However, there is one song from the show that most fans have never heard in Full. Bruce actor Michael Cerveris (Hedwig and The Angry Inch, Sweeney Todd, Assassins) brought one of the show’s cut songs to life with the help of his country band, Loose Cattle. The track, “Pony Girl,” heard in the show as only as a 45 second a cappella lullaby, now lives on to ride another day in its full version. In case you missed it earlier, check out the report below for a look at the song that no Fun Home fan can truly go without.

Michael Cerveris opened up about the song to Broadway World back in November, saying:

"One of my favorite moments in Fun Home is the quiet moment when Bruce lies down on the floor and sings a lullaby to small Alison, afraid at the thought her dad is going to disappear into the night in a strange city; it's tender and dark, sweet and troubled all at the same time.I didn't learn that the fragment of Pony Girl I sing in the show was from a full song that had been written but discarded from an earlier draft of the show, and we're so excited to have this special recording coming out on as a vinyl 45 in January with Alison's art and Jeanine and Lisa's endorsement. We like to imagine little Alison putting it on her Close N Play record player and going to sleep listening to it in her childhood bedroom on Maple Avenue."

Check out this performance of Loose Cattle performing the full version of “Pony Girl,” live at Joe’s Pub in July 2015.

What do you think about the full country version of “Pony Girl?” Are you glad that Michael Cerveris and the band immortalize the full version of the song? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section at the bottom of the page.

Fun Home is currently playing at the Circle in The Square Theater, 235 West 50th Street in New York, New York. Fun Home won Five Tony’s in 2015 including Best Musical.
