Syrian National Orchestra and Blur Frontman Damon Albarn Unite for London Concert in June

A Syrian orchestra that once disbanded due to political strife in the region has announced that it will reunite for a concert in London on June 25. The Syrian National Orchestra for Arabic Music (SNOAM) will feature songwriter, and Blur frontman, Damon Albarn, along with other guest performers.

Led by conductor Issam Rafea, the 90-musician strong orchestra first worked with Mr. Albarn at Damascus Opera House in 2009. Mr. Albarn also appeared on the track "White Flag" on the hip-hop funk outfit Gorillaz's Plastic Beach album.

During the onset of civil war in the region during spring 2011, Rafea and many other members of the orchestra had to flee for their safety. The London concert, which is marking time passed since the first world war, will be the first time the group has performed since the violence.

Rafea said of the reunion:

"The fabric of Syrian society has been torn apart as a result of the conflict. At the Syrian National Orchestra of Arabic Music's performance, there will be people representing both sides of the argument present both on stage and in the audience. But all are in agreement that we want it to end. This concert is an wonderful opportunity to show the world another side to the Syrian story - joy and a celebration of our music and culture. We have not played together in a long time, so we are particularly looking forward to a wonderful night at the Southbank Centre this summer."

Forming in 1990, the orchestra will perform traditional Arab music along with experimental work based on traditional forms. The orchestra turned professional in 2003 when Rafea, a 2010 Best Composer Award-winner, became its principal conductor.

The gala is set to take place at the Royal Festival Hall in June and is presented by Africa Express.
