Sir András Schiff Brings ‘Last Sonatas’ Back to CSO

After starting the project in March of 2015, Sir András Schiff is set to return to Chicago's Symphony Center for the third and final installment of his The Last Sonatas series next month. Currently slated for St. Valentine's Day, the Hungarian-born virtuoso will be performing the penultimate and final sonatas of classical composers Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, and Schubert as part of Symphony Center Presents PowerShares QQQ Piano Series.

Nearly a year in the making, celebrated British classical pianist, Sir András Schiff, will finally be headed back to Chicago's Symphony Center for his final installment in a series of concerts dubbed, The Last Sonatas.

In a press release for the event, it's been revealed that Schiff's final installment will include the last piano sonatas of several of classical music's greats:

"Schiff's exploration of the final three piano sonatas of Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert began with a March 2015 program at Symphony Center and continued with the second installment in November 2015.

"His series culminates with performances of the final piano sonatas of the four composers. Schiff curated The Last Sonatas with the intention of displaying each composer's 'final word' in the genre."

Despite the works being well-known, Zachary Wolf of the New York Times recalled that the previous installment in the series didn't want for the surprising personal flourish here and there:

"Mr. Schiff didn't shy from personal touches: a note held longingly beyond its written value, an aggressive edge to a repetition of the theme in the Scherzo."
