‘Waitress’ Sara Bareilles Talks Love of Musical Theater Before Broadway Opening

The musical adaptation of the 2007 film Waitress is gearing up for its big Broadway debut this spring. There is a lot of buzz around Waitress for many reasons but one of the big ones is that the music and lyrics are written by five time Grammy Award nominated singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles. Bareilles is perhaps best known for writing a song about not writing someone a “Love Song.” Many people might not know that Sara Bareilles is a lifelong fan of musical theater and performed in community theater productions of Charlotte’s Web and Little Shop of Horrors. From Skid Row to the Great White Way, Sara has had quite the journey.

Sara Bareilles has been a lifelong fan of musical theater. Bareilles recently spoke with Billboard where she discussed Waitress and her history in community theater:

“I’m living out my dreams. My sister and mom were both in theater, and it was this whole discovery for me to see the community of cast and crew. I was in Little Shop of Horrors -- I played Audrey and a street urchin -- and Charlotte’s Web as a kid. Soundtracks like Miss Saigon and Oklahoma! were my introduction to being a listener.”

Sara Bareilles’ musical adaptation of Waitress goes into previews on March 25, 2016 and officially opens on April 24, 2016 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on 256 W. 47th St.

Waitress the musical features music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles and a book by Jesie Nelson. The original production is under the direction of Diane Paulus and stars Jessie Mueller, Dakin Matthews, Kimiko Glenn, Nick Cordero and Christopher Fitzgerald.
