Collage New Music Celebrates Edward Cohen this Valentine’s Day

Boston based Collage New Music has announced the next concert in its 2015-2016, set for Valentine's Day, entitled Eddie's Musical Spheres Memorial Concert. In honor of Edward Cohen's enormous gifts and contributions to Boston's musical life on the whole and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's music department in particular, the Institute organized a series of concerts in Cohen's name. Collage New Music was asked to give the first of these concerts in 2006 and is now returning to present the 2016 concert held on February 14, at 4 p.m. in Killian Hall at MIT.

The evening's program includes music by Cohen's greatest influence, Seymour Shifrin; an early song cycle by his MIT colleague Peter Child; and music by recent MIT graduate Nina Young with Collage New Music's Music Director, David Hoose conducting.

Guest vocalist, soprano Nina Guo, a recent graduate of New England Conservatory, explains in the press release touting the vent that she couldn't be happier to be performing such powerful material with so prestigious an ensemble:

"I'm extremely excited and honored to work with Collage New Music on the music of Edward Cohen and Peter Child.

"The music is incredible; we explore the often-ignored human needs of several figures, Eurydice and Leda and [English poet] John Clare.

"Cohen and Child pull back the curtain of the characters we think we know to reveal themes of resentment, physical desire, and descent into madness. The music is in excellent hands with CNM; it is inspiring to sing with a group so passionate about new music."

MIT and Collage New Music's Eddie's Musical Spheres Memorial Concert is free and open to the public.
