Rachel Weisz to Debut in David Hare's 'Plenty' at the Public Theater for 2016-17

It's been announced that the Oscar-winning superstar, Rachel Weisz, will be featured in the revival of David Hare's award-winner, Plenty. The performance will be billed as part of the non-profit Public Theater's 2016-17 season.

With David Leveaux directing, Hare's 1982 drama is set in the years succeeding World War II. The narrative hones in on a former secret agent and how her experiences during the war affect her civilian life after combat.

Plenty first premiered at the Public Theater on the same year the production was completed. The original cast included Edward Hermann as Raymond Brock, Kate Nelligan as Susan Traherne and Kelsey Grammer as "Codename Lazar."

Later on, the piece would receive a film adaptation and would star Meryl Streep, Tracey Ullman, Sting, Sir Ian McKellen, Charles Dance and John Gielgud.

Artistic Director Oskar Eustis remarked on the new staging in a statement:

"Plenty is one of the great plays of the post-war era, and certainly its critical production was one of the high points of The Public Theater's existence. Now, over 30 years later, Plenty is a story of optimism and disillusionment that carries an entirely new power. We are thrilled to be welcoming David Hare back to the theater that was his first American home."

Hare's brainchild has won the 1983 Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best American Play and the 1983 Drama League Awards for Distinguished Performance for Herrmann and Nelligan. It also received a Tony nom for Best Play, Best Actor in a Play (Hermann) and Beast Featured Actor in a Play (George N. Marin).

The announcement certainly comes to the excitement of Weisz's fandom as she will be a resounding addition to the new lineup.
