Nina Simone's Daughter, Lisa, Defends Zoe Saldana Against Scathing Remarks

Amid the scathing backlash surrounding a studio's decision to hire Zoe Saldana to play Nina Simone in an upcoming biopic, it's now been reported that Nina's daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly, has stood up for Saldana. Saying what more than likely needed to be said, Simone Kelly stated that the casting decision did not lay with Saldana and thus she should be exonerated.

In a statement, Simone Kelly said:

"It's unfortunate that Zoe Saldana is being attacked so viciously when she is someone who is part of a larger picture. It's clear she brought her best to this project, but unfortunately she's being attacked when she's not responsible for any of the writing or the lies."

The young Simone Kelly's statement should resonate with others who are slamming Saldana for her role in the Nina movie. As it was not Saldana's decision directly, it should not be held against the actress for her portrayal of the singer.

The heiress also cleared the air regarding a harsh tweet that was lobbed at Saldana from Nina Simone's verified Twitter account. The handle, which is managed by the Simone estate, tweeted a remark aimed at Zoe that said, "Cool story but please take Nina's name out your mouth. For the rest of your life."

As Simone Kelly clarified, the tweet was posted by an irate family friend and not Ms. Simone's daughter. However, Nina's daughter did remain steadfast in her position that changing the actress' physical appearance is offensive not only to the entire black community but Nina Simone and her entire legacy.

Ms. Simone was an activist in her own right and, more than likely, would be offended at the physical alterations required of Saldana to play Ms. Simone, of whom she does not resemble at all.

Have a look for yourself, though, with the trailer below.
