Thomas Adès Joins the Boston Symphony Orchestra as Artistic Partner for 2016-17

The Boston Symphony Orchestra has announced that it will welcome internationally renowned British composer Thomas Adès to the new position of artistic partner. The appointment is a three-year post that will feature him as a composer, conductor, pianist and teacher.

The partnership will commence during the orchestra's 2016-17 season. Mr. Adès will conduct his own Totentanz with the orchestra in November also.

Totentanz is a unique production. It is a morbid undertaking inspired by a 15th century painted cloth in a church in Luebeck, Germany. A monumental staging, the season will also feature a performance of Schubert's Winterreise with Mr. Adès on the piano.

Mr. Adès said in a statement, "It seems natural now to broaden the experience beyond conducting and chamber music to include composing specifically for these gifted players and teaching alongside them."

Along with the announcement, the BSO also unveiled that its season will feature 14 programs led by Andris Nelsons, a young star in the classical world.

It was also noted that Mr. Adès will also play a prominent role at Tanglewood, where he has also been appointed the director of the Festival of Contemporary Music for 2018-18. With this post, the composer will work the team at Tanglewood Music Center, which is the orchestra's summer academy.

Also on the bill is a concert of Mahler's Fourth Symphony, which explores a child's view of Heaven, and will feature Kristine Opolais, Nelson's spouse.

This upcoming season should shape to be something very special for its fan base. Congratulations to Thomas Adès on a resounding appointment and to the BSO for its pursuit to explore new horizons.
