‘Southern Comfort’ Annette O’Toole Talks Favorite Theatrical Performances

Annette O’Toole is a bona fide living legend. There is known question about that. However, there is a question about who living legends look up to. Recently, Playbill asked the Southern Comfort star about some of her favorite experiences as a theater goer. Check out the report below for a taste of O’Toole’s favorite performances that she has seen.

Despite his objections, Annette O’Toole added her husband Michael McKean to her list of favorite performances, writing:

“I saw my Michael disappear into the character of Arthur P, proprietor of Superior Donuts. I watched him play this part at Steppenwolf and at the Music Box many times, but each time he became a man I did not know--broken, lonely, quietly drowning.”

Another performance on her list of great theatre going experience was the famed Audra McDonald in Porgy & Bess, as O’Toole added:

“Audra is the gold standard. This performance moved me so much that I was a wreck for days afterwards. She was Bess, but she was Every Woman, too. And my God, that voice. I adore her.”

And lastly, what list of favs can be complete without Angela Lansbury? Not O’Toole’s because she added her to it, writing:

“I saw Dame Angela play Mame at the Ahmanson in Los Angeles from the nosebleed seats (all I could afford). She was spectacularly wild, sexy, and everything I always wanted to be. She still is.”

Annette O'Toole can currently be seen in Southern Comfort at The Public Theater.
