LONDON, ENGLAND - NOVEMBER 26: Paul Lynch wins The Booker Prize with "Prophet Song" at The Booker Prize Winner Announcement at Old Billingsgate on November 26, 2023 in London, England.

Last Sunday, Nov. 26, Irish novelist Paul Lynch snagged the 2023 Booker Prize award for his book "Prophet Song" about a dystopian Ireland on the brink of catastrophe told against the narrative backdrop of an ordinary family.

The Booker Prize is the premier literary award handed out annually to the best-written English work of fiction that is published in both the U.K. and Ireland.

Lynch, who is now 46 years old, stands as the winner out of 6 finalists from Ireland, UK, USA, and Canada. The awards ceremony was held in London where the author also won a $63,000 prize. The 6 books were chosen from an overall pool of 163 books published from Oct. 1 of 2022 until Sept. 30 this year.

In an X (formerly Twitter) post, the official account of The Booker Prizes congratulated Lynch for the achievement, writing, "We're delighted to announce that the winner of the Booker Prize 2023 is "Prophet Song" by Paul Lynch. Huge Congratulations."

Booker Prize Judge and Paul Lynch Speak on 'Prophet Song'

In a press release by The Booker Prize, Esi Edugyan, chair of the annual prize's judges, shared the reason why Lynch won was that he unabashedly tells the terrifying story of "Ireland descending into totalitarianism," with "feats of language" that are both engaging and gripping.

"With great vividness, Prophet Song captures the social and political anxieties of our current moment. Readers will find it soul-shattering and true, and will not soon forget its warnings," Edugyan added.

When asked by the judges about the book, Lynch said that he was "trying to see into the modern chaos. The unrest in Western democracies." For him, "Prophet Song" is his attempt at "radical empathy," at sharing a vivid experience that endeavors readers to "understand better."

Ultimately, Lynch hopes to immerse the readers to a high enough degree that after finishing the book, they would not only "know" but would also "feel" the problem the book presents.
