An Ode to Buffalo Tom's Favorite Female Voices

The new single, which is the band's second track in their forthcoming album: "Jump Rope," is Buffalo Tom's heartfelt homage to their favorite female voices across varying artistic mediums like "photography, literature, and films," shared frontman Chris Colbourn to Flood Magazine.

These female influences include singer Mavis Staples, New England short story writer/poet Grace Paley, Harold and Maude, Rosemary's Baby actress Ruth Gordon, Anna Magnani star of Pasolini's 'Mama Roma', Italian novelist Elena Ferrante, Georgia politician Stacey Abrams, and New Zealand novelist Janet Frame 'An Angel at My Table'.

Its music video, for one, is a direct tribute to the Belgian-born film director and screenwriter Agnès Varda. Specifically, her 1986 film "Vagabond," as it highlights the indomitable human spirit amid a tumultuous journey through life.

Similarly, their new MV includes a "heroine [who] escapes her bedroom to sing her song and start a new girl state," Colbourn explained.

Colbourn also said that channeling Varda, her "Vagabond" flick's protagonist in particular, was the perfect prototype for a character he has been searching for in months, someone with "an unapologetic independence" and not just a "tragic figure sleeping in the rough."

On Buffalo Tom's New Album 'Jump Rope'

In a statement by the alternative rock band's guitarist, Bill Janovits, he said: "We had not planned on waiting six years since our last album, 'Quiet and Peace,' but as with the rest of the world, the pandemic put a halt to our momentum."

"Still, being locked down in our homes, with instruments and recording gear, we kept on writing, accruing a sizable backlog of song ideas, and sending each other ideas for arrangements and parts," he continued.

Janovits also explained that conceiving ideas in this "limited" state naturally pushed the "direction" of their new musical project to be more subdued as compared to their past projects, leaning into the quaint soundscapes of acoustic instruments and a "quieter production."

As they emerged from their "basements,' Janovits recalled that they steadily got to rehearse again together, albeit more calmly this time, equipped with an "acoustic guitar."

Aside from new releases, Buffalo Tom is also in the middle of embarking on an already sold-out US tour through Boston, New York, Gloucester, and Somerville, alongside a European tour in the latter half of this year.

As of now, two of the shows in the EU tour are sold out, namely October performances in Antwerp and Sneek. That said, September shows in Dublin, Glasgow, and London, with one on Oct. 7 for Cologne, still has available tickets up for grabs.
