The Marías Releases Groovy Single ‘Run Your Mouth’ Ahead of Newly Announced Album ‘Submarine'

Grammy-nominated indie pop band The Marías makes a groovy comeback with their new single "Run Your Mouth" off of their recently announced album "Submarine," the group's highly-anticipated sophomore record set to release on May 31.

The new single is an LA indie bop with a funky bass line that is seemingly juxtaposed by its anxiety-representing lyrics, telling the perspective of an avoidant persona "fed up" with all the incessant and relentless talking during a difficult moment.

This idea of "retreating" into oneself is one of the many themes revolving around solitude that "Submarine" is going to explore, delving deep into every nook and cranny of the complex human emotion, especially the gravity and beauty involved in choosing to be alone.

The Marías' 'Submarine,' An Exploration on Solitude

The newly released lead single is just the first of many tracks that'll embark on this exploration of solitude, although it may be the only song in the forthcoming album that has this particular bedroom pop soundscape.

Written by band members María Zardoya and Josh Conway, the song's release was accompanied by a music video that was directed by long-time collaborator, Bethany Vargas, with added creative from from the duo.

The video puts a '90s backdrop to the otherwise completely modern-sounding song, with visual sensibilities akin to that of Backstreet Boys music videos or Gap commercials of the time.

Of their new "earworm" single, Zardoya said: "This was one of the first songs Josh and I wrote on Submarine. I was conflict-avoidant at the time and whenever someone wanted to talk about something serious, I'd run and hide."

"I learned that was a protective mechanism and I didn't have the capacity to open up," she added. "There's no other song on the album like it, hope you dance to this one."

"Submarine" is the band's follow-up project to their critically acclaimed 2021 debut record, "Cinema," which earned the musical act their Grammy nod. In addition, their lead single for this particular album, "Hush," even earned the top spot on Billboard's Adult Alternative Airplay chart.

The "Run Your Mouth" MV premiered on MTV Live, MTVU, MTV Biggest Pop, and on the Paramount Times Square billboards last March 7.
