Reviews: Lizzie No Receives Critical Acclaim for Breakout Album ‘Halfsies’

After releasing her breakout album: "Halfsies" earlier this year through Thirty Tigers and Miss Freedomland, Lizzie No has since accrued rave reviews from both fans and the press.

No's press recognition doesn't stop on reviews, however, as she was even featured in this month's Rolling Stone Future of Music Issue among 24 others who are "dreaming up fresh sounds and inspiring new movements."

Last week, she also made a return visit to NPR's World Café for a short 4-song set list session alongside a conversation about her core inspirations as a singer-songwriter and how Beyoncé filled that role in terms of pushing her to break out of the mundane and pursue new horizons.

As for her latest offering, she cited video games like "Final Fantasy" as the source of its thematic storytelling, presenting an "epic journey filled with leveling up and finding allies."

Critical Acclaim for Lizzie No's 'Halfsies'

Cementing No as part of a new pantheon of genre-defying artists, "Halfsies" features guest performances from Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Allison Russell, Kill Rock Stars recording artist Brian Dunne, and strings from the Grammy-winning group Attacca Quartet.

The album also reached the No. 13 spot on the Americana Albums chart. It peaked at No. 2 on the NACC Folks charts while garnering rave reviews from The New York Times, Billboard, American Songwriter, FLOOD, Under The Radar, and Stereogum.

In addition, No was singled out as WXPN's Artist to Watch last March and No Depression's Spotlight Artist at the top of this year. She also joined Marissa Moss and Natalie Weiner in an in-depth interview in their Don't Rock The Inbox newsletter.

Here are some of the reviews for "Halfsies" right below.

"Halfsies marks a declarative and daring step forward in both narrative writing and songcraft...The 11 tracks include Nineties alt-rock, piano ballads, stately waltzes, country weepers, and atmospheric indie-folk." - Rolling Stone

"Halfsies channels influences like Patty Griffin and overtly name-checks others like Lucinda Williams. A travelogue of sorts, housing both ethereal folk harmonies and explosive, rock-fueled barn burners, the album is animated by stories of physical and spiritual passage - of hunting for personal freedom and dreaming of collective liberation." - The New York Times

"The 11-song project, in [the] solid singer-songwriter tradition, proliferates with keen observations, excavating both internal and external struggles...No's warm, welcoming voice, emotional clarity, and eloquent songwriting skills gleam." - Billboard

Following No's tour across the country this spring, the folk artist is slated to cross the pond and start a series of performances in the UK, with more US routing additions this summer including Chicago, St. Paul, and Milwaukee.

She will also appear at XPoNential Music Festival and Bourbon & Beyond this fall. For the full routing, visit her official website by clicking here.
