Old 97’s Return to CBS Saturday Morning Performing Songs Off Latest Album ‘American Primitive’

Over the last weekend, alt-country pioneers Old 97's made their monumental return to the CBS Saturday Morning stage to perform three songs from their now-critically-acclaimed 13th studio album: "American Primitive," out now via ATO Records.

The three-decade-long lineup of singer and guitarist Rhett Miller, bassist Murry Hammond, guitarist Ken Bethea, and drummer Philip Peeples offered enthralling performances of "Falling Down," album title track "American Primitive," and lead single "Where The Road Goes."

Today, the lattermost track still sits at the No. 3 spot on the Americana Radio Chart.

Acclaim for Old 97's 'American Primitive'

On release day, Rolling Stone featured Old 97's and their new album, alongside recognizing the group's three-decade-long creative partnership, among other publications like The Dallas Morning News, BrooklynVegan, SPIN, and Texas Monthly.

The record also received rave reviews before release, with Rolling Stone writing: "No matter how bleak Miller may feel, he's ready to dance until the end of the world, and that spirit is infectious from the beginning of American Primitive to the end."

Long-form music magazine No Depression also chimed in with praises for Old 97's new offering, saying, "...they sound as inspired as ever: Three decades in, they're still very much alive and kicking."

Glide Magazine, on the other hand, wrote: "Veteran alt-country mainstays Old 97's released their first album in four years and it was worth every minute of the wait," adding that "American Primitive" exemplifies the band's longevity and ever-evolving musicianship.

In celebration of their recent success with "American Primitive," alongside the 30th anniversary of their powerhouse debut "Hitchhike to Rhome" later this year, the band will embark on a lengthy 20-plus-date summer tour that will kick off in July.

Stops include Boston, New York City, Minneapolis, Washington DC, and more. For the full tour routing and dates, visit: old97s.com/shows.
